The Boundary Rider's Report March 2023

Season: Guyra has received 321mm of rain this year. Dams are evaporating, and our moisture probes indicate good levels of soil moistures in our basalt soils,  our lighter soils are drying up very quickly.  Autumn is here, the trees are starting to change colours, however we still have green grass. We have not had our first frost yet!

ο»Ώ

Pastures & Trees: We are really happy with how our pastures are growing, following the inaugural use of our Williams Seeder.  With the showers coming through just at the right time to top up the moisture profile. We are looking forward to seeing the pasture fill out and grow in this mild autumn weather.  We are still planting replacement trees in gaps, where trees have died in our new tree guards.

Over 100 angus cattle for sale, including 36 Angus Stud HBR & APR proven breeders, pregnancy tested in calf to Bald Blair Stud sires.  These cows are aged from 5 - 8 years old.   These cows represent a real opportunity to secure cows that have already contributed to our Stud herd, and continue to do so into the future.  They also include breeders that have been used in our ET Programme, in addition to breeders that are progeny of it.

The Bald Blair Angus herd is quite unique, in terms of longevity of business and it is a consequence of the attention to detail to the breeding herd over many generations  that sustains us through tough times like 2019 and also good times.  We have just completed the  weaning of Bull and Heifer calves off these cows we are offering for sale and have compiled them into their catalogue order.

36 Bald Blair Angus HBR and APR stud cows PTIC.  These cows have been AI’d then covered by Bald Blair Sires.

ο»ΏIn addition to these Stud Breeders we will also be offering a nice line of Commercial Angus Maiden Dams PTIC joined to Bald Blair Bulls sired by Paratrooper P15.  These Heifers will be offered in 4 pens of 6 Dams each.

Also a line up of 60 Bald Blair Angus commercial weaner heifers, these heifers have only been recently weaned.  They will be offered in 4 pens of 15 head each.  This will be the complete offering of commercial heifers, we will retain the bottoms as trade animals and are offering all commercial heifers from one of our properties.

Please contact us on 02 6779 2141 or 0427 722 908 or email kirstywhite@baldblair.com.au if you would like us to send you a catalogue when they are printed.

These animals have just recently been inspected by our Elders team, including Mark Atkin 0455 310 657 and Wayne Jenkyn 0428 293 556 at Guyra and Brain Kennedy, Elders Stud Stock 0427 844 047 and Lincoln McKinlay Elders Stud Stock Auctioneer 0400 552 458.

Bulls: We have vaccinated all sale bulls with Vibriovax, Pestiguard and 7in1.  They have also had their booster shot.  We will continually monitor these bulls in the lead up to the sale.  They have been split into three groups.  1 small group of bulls we used in last year’s joining and then 2 larger groups of approx 44 bulls each in contemporary ages.  In addition we have another great lineup of 18 month old bulls for sale as part of this year's sale team.

All our Bull Calves have been weaned.  They have all been yard weaned for 5 days, worked regularly by our stock team, they have been exposed to bikes, buggy’s, horses, dogs and utes.  They are about to go onto fresh pastures.

Sheep yards: Ramage has started work on the new sheep yards & they are looking fantastic, some features include a Clipex automatic sheep handling machine, curved race, weighbox, cement under race and walking area.

ο»Ώ

Fencing:  It was sooo good to see Taylor and Lindsay McDonald arrive at Bald Blair on Monday 13th March.  We have a huge line up of fencing jobs for them to do.  Starting with securing areas in the new sheep yards, a new gateway in the feedlot yard and fencing off the Bald Blair Lagoon.  The Lagoon fencing project has been made possible with the support of the Northern Tablelands Local Land Services and we are really looking forward to seeing the benefits to birds, water quality and establishing some more trees in this area.  Taylor went shopping for some fencing supplies and you will see in the photo he did not hold back - bring it on.

Water: We have been fixing pipes to get water going at the polocrosse shed.  The carnival will be held for the first time in years on the first weekend in April.  We really look forward to watching our nephews Duncan and Darby play on their horses Jack and Squizzy. There is nothing better than watching the next generation out on the field having fun with their mates. It is a great event, so if you are in the area and free come and check it out.

We have an excavator cleaning out dams at Kolora.  We were lucky enough to tap into a well with one dam and the others will fill up again, when we get a good shower of rain.

AgTech: We have been looking into Agtech again and seeing what options are available to make us more efficient.  One existing piece of Agtech we have is a moisture probe and we have been monitoring the results at Bald Blair and Gatwood closely as the season changes.

Rangers Valley visit : We were delighted to welcome Rangers Valley Cattle Station and their clients from Sydney based Green Pastures, Volcanos & United Foods to Bald Blair on Tuesday, 7th March.  The guests flew in from Sydney and enjoyed their first visit to a farm.  Their enthusiasm and support of beef production was reassuring and we look forward to returning the visit when we go to Sydney for the Royal Easter Show in April by attending their restaurant.
