The Boundary Rider's Report May 2022

Thank you for taking the time to check out our latest Boundary Rider’s Report.

Thank you to all bidders and underbidders of the 24 Bald Blair Angus cows offered for sale on Friday 6th May. We were very happy with the result for commercial cows in calf. They head up the road to Tenterfield and we wish the new owners all the very best. Thank you to the Elders team, Wayne Jenkyn and  Mark Atkin. There was a little story in The Land about the sale - here is the link:  https://www.theland.com.au/story/7732036/bald-blair-ptic-cows-attract-plenty-of-interest-in-online-sale/?cs=4951

Abbott and Arthur’s lambs sold well too! They sold 18 prime lambs at the Guyra sale yards on Wednesday 11th May - a very cold, wet and windy day. This was the first of many stock trades for the boys. Thanks again to Wayne Jenkyn and the buyers for braving the weather.

It was great to send our first autumn drop steers to Rangers Valley Feedlot. We appreciate the opportunity to supply Rangers Valley and look forward to providing them with more steers into the future. Please check out the presentation that Keith Howe did at the MLA conference recently for an insight into their business.

The season here at Bald Blair is wet, lots of grass and fat stock. Nearly 500mm of rain for the year so far. Frosts have just started, and it is cooling down.

Bull Sale Team update

Thank you Roger Evans, Bovine Scanning Services for scanning our R (2020) Stud Bulls for their 600 day weights and traits.

Bull testing was done on the 16th and 18th May with the team from Guyra District Vets. They complete a BullCheck - which is a professional reproductive examination for bulls that provides breeders, vendors and buyers with assurance that bulls have a high probability of being fertile at the point of sale.  If you are buying bulls this year - it is really important you take the time to read more information about the importance of a BullCheck being done by an accredited cattle vet.
https://mycattlevet.com.au/bull-testing/bullcheck/

On the 17th May Dick Whale independently structurally assessed the bulls to ensure only the bulls that are structurally sound will make the bull sale team. The data will also be submitted for inclusion in their structural EBVs.

The BullCheck and structural assessment results will enable us to work out our final bull sale team. Once the team is finalised we submit the list to the Angus Society and an online catalogue will be available for viewing in mid June and the printed catalogue early July.

We will again have photos and videos of individual bulls closer to the sale and can provide additional information on any lots you may be interested in.

Being of Service

The Angus Society of Australia’s AGM on the 26th May will be the last meeting I attend as a director and chair.  I have been on the board for 6 years and chairperson for 2 years.  It has been a tremendous experience, both challenging and rewarding.  I encourage anyone interested in being of service to the Angus breed to attend a company director course and put your name forward.  I would like to thank all members of the board for their support and friendship.  A huge thank you to Peter Parnell, Scott Wright and all the team at Angus Australia - thank you for being of service to the angus community.
