The Boundary Rider's Report June 2021

Bald Blair Angus

Welcome to the June 2021 Boundary Rider’s Report

Snapshot:
Bald Blair Angus is located East of Guyra on the Northern Tablelands of NSW.
We have an elevation of between 1280 and 1420m above sea level.
Area: approx 2000 ha over 4 properties.
Enterprises: Angus Stud, commercial Angus herd, crossbred and sheep.

How is your season going?
Winter is well and truly here. The temperature has dropped, it is cold but we have a great body of feed available to get us through this winter. It snowed on the 9th and 10th of June which resulted in the road being closed from Guyra to Armidale and Arthur getting a day off school to build snowmen with his dogs. Our farm stay was booked as soon as snow was forecast and our guests were very happy with their snow experience. During these cold snaps we ensure our stock has plenty of hay and shelter until the sun shines again.
All markets, Cattle and Sheep are holding strong at this time, herd rebuilding dominating the market place at this time.

What's on our plate?
Bull sale preparation is taking major priority at the moment. However I have just had my long planned Hip surgery, recovery is well underway; so I have a bit of office time in front of me as I allow recovery to occur. Sounds like a half life refit, anyway all going well. I would like to acknowledge our team, Tom Cleaver and Jonathon Woods for taking on all the tasks at this very busy time. A big thankyou.

2021 Bull Sale team
All bull sale bulls have been freeze branded and huge thanks to Tom and Jono for putting in the hours to get this job done. If you would like to know more about freeze branding check out this information from the Angus Society https://www.angusaustralia.com.au/breeding/general-articles/freezbranding/

The bulls have now all been fully vaccinated and received all animal health treatments before the sale. All bulls have undergone pesti ear notch tests, all clear, there are no PI’s. They have all undergone their bull check, structural assessment, 600DW and traits. All this data has been submitted to the Angus Society for inclusion in the latest TACE run.

97% of our bulls in this year's catalogues are Parent Verified. Parent Verified means that the bulls have been DNA verified to both his Sire and Dam. For more information about Parent and Sire verification head to https://www.angusaustralia.com.au/marketing/sale-catalogues/angus-parentage-assurance-program/

The bull sale team’s treatments are all up to date, so the bulls are good to go on sale day. They have received the following vaccination & drench treatments:
  • Bovi Shield MH
  • Botulinum
  • Flukazole C
  • Pestiguard
  • 7in1
  • Vibriovax
  • Tick Fever
  • Lice treatment
They have all been Ear Notched and identified as free from Pestivirus, there were no PI’s identified.

Bald Blair Angus Online Bull Sale Catalogue
We have submitted our bull sale team to the Angus Society and the online bull sale catalogue is now available. https://bit.ly/3xx4UZI
The online catalogue is a very powerful tool that will enable you to search for the right sire for your breeding program. Create or login to your AngusTech account and you will be able to see 100 animals at a time. Some options may be to search by sire lines, or EBV highest to lowest eg: if you are looking for bulls with an IMF of between 2.5 and 3.5 you will be able to find them. Alternatively if you look closely at INDEXES eg DOM (Domestic Index) you can search the highest indexing bull in the catalogue. Remember it is important to look behind the index and ensure it fits your breeding program. Sam is happy to talk you through how to do this or go to the Angus Society Education area on their website to learn more https://www.angusaustralia.com.au/education/using-angustech/database-search/
